The first major boxing event of 2019 takes place on Jan. 19 when Manny Pacquiao defends his WBA (regular) welterweight against Adrien Broner from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao, (60-7-2, 39 KOs) boxing's only eight-division world champion, notched his first stoppage win over 8 1/2 years in his last time out in July when he defeated Lucas Matthysse in the seventh round to capture the WBA belt. It had been rumored that Pacquiao would be meeting Floyd Mayweather once again after a social media post of the two legends in Tokyo went viral last in September. Instead, Mayweather took an exhibition bout against Tenshin Nasukawa on New Year's Eve and has vowed to remain retired, so Pacquiao shifted his focus to Broner.

After winning three consecutive fights, the last two fights for Broner (33-3-1, one no contest, 24 KOs) have been shaky. The former four-division world champion got decimated by Mikey Garcia, losing a lopsided decision in July 2017. He followed that up with a draw against Jessie Vargas in April. Vargas won the first half of the fight with Broner making a strong run in the second half. Pundits were split on who actually won. Negotiations for a rematch went nowhere as Vargas went on to sign a deal to fight on DAZN.

The first major boxing event of 2019 is here. Tonight (Saturday, January 19th) from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, eight-division boxing champion and sporting icon Manny Pacquiao (60-7-2, 39 KOs) defends his WBA “regular” welterweight title against the controversial and provocative Adrien Broner (33-3-1, 24 KOs).

This is Pacquiao’s first pay-per-view fight since November 2016, and it also doubles as his return to the United States. He’s also signed with Al Haymon and Premier Boxing Champions, so expect to see him on PBC shows for the rest of his decorated career. At 40 years old, he’s obviously not in his prime, but he is coming off a TKO of Lucas Matthysse last July, and can still compete at a high level. Broner lost to Mikey Garcia two years ago, and drew with Jessie Vargas last year, so he’s not had a win since Adrian Granados in February 2017. He is a multi-division world champion himself, but his resume of beating high-level competition is flimsy at best. Pacquiao would undoubtedly be the biggest win of his career, but he comes into this as the underdog, and while he has youth and his peak athletic years on his side, Pacman is clearly more skilled.

Jorge Linares has won world titles as a featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight and been one of boxing's top fighters for years.

But after losing his lightweight belt by 10th-round knockout to pound-for-pound king Vasiliy Lomachenko in a terrific and competitive battle on May 12 a fight in which Linares dropped Lomachenko in the sixth round and made the king look human Linares is going to give the junior welterweight division a try in his return to the ring.

Although Linares isn't shutting the door forever on the lightweight division, where he would return for the right fight, he is going to begin to try to make his case at 140 pounds, five more than lightweight.

Linares' efforts will begin when he faces Abner Cotto in a scheduled 12-round bout on Saturday at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, in the main event of a "Golden Boy Fight Night" card, which will be streamed live on Facebook Watch (9 p.m. ET) in the United States as part of the company's deal with the social media giant.

My new division, 140, I think it's a good thing for me, going up. I'm ready for that, Linares said. I want a title in fourth division. I'm focused on this Saturday and maybe next year I can make a good fight for a new title match.

Linares (44-4, 27 KOs), a Venezuela native fighting out of Las Vegas, said he had some struggles getting down to 135 pounds for the fight with Lomachenko. Linares had boxed as a lightweight since 2010, and at age 33 making weight has become more of an issue.

The last fight with Lomachenko felt different. It's not about Lomachenko; I'm fighting more than six years at 135," he said. "Now I'm ready to move to 140. I look stronger, faster, more natural. Now I'm ready for that. I'm looking for a good show; a good win. I'm not looking for the KO because I'm a very good boxer. More important for me is to make the good show and also win the fight."

Although Linares believes his future is at junior welterweight, he said he would make an exception and return to lightweight if he could get a rematch with Lomachenko, a fight that does not seem out of the question of happening given how good of a fight it was, or a shot at titleholder Mikey Garcia, with whom there had been talks before the fight with Lomachenko was made.

I'm looking for the rematch again. He wants the fight, I want the fight, too," Linares said of Lomachenko. If he wants to see me at 135 again, I can go down again only for that fight, and then going back to 140.

I'm looking for a fight with [Garcia] next, too. So many good fighters at 140. Jose Ramirez is an amazing champion, too, so I want that fight too.

Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Linares, said he hopes he can deliver those fights to Linares.

He wants a rematch with Lomachenko. It was a very competitive fight. It was a definitive result but it was a very good fight. It was a very close fight," Gomez said. "He would love to do the rematch with him. So if Lomachenko is open to that we're going to look into that. He wants to fight the big names. He's willing to give Mikey a fight or any of the top fighters at 135 or 140 pounds.

First, Linares must handle major underdog Cotto (23-3, 12 KOs), 31, of Puerto Rico, who has won five fights in a row since a fifth-round knockout loss to former junior lightweight titlist Javier Fortuna in November 2014.

I've prepared very well for this fight. I'm training with Jorge Zerpa for this fight. He isn't a new trainer. In fact, we were together 11 years ago when I fought for my first world title against Oscar 'El Chololo' Larios in Las Vegas (in 2007)," Linares said. "We're working on a lot of things, but mostly we've been reviewing and going back to an old school style of training. I'm not changing my style, just adding some things. I had been thinking about moving to 140 pound for some time.

When the opportunity to fight Lomachenko came, I took the fight at 135 pounds even though it was already difficult to do so. If I were to get the opportunity to fight him again, I would drop to 135 pounds, but for now I'll look for more opportunities at 140 pounds. I need to get stay focused on the opponent in front of me. I know Abner Cotto is tough. He knows how to fight on the inside and the outside. I know he will work hard to give a great fight this Saturday."

In the co-feature, lightweight Romero Duno (17-1, 14 KOs), a Philippines native based in Los Angeles, will face Mexico's Ezequiel Aviles (16-2-3, 6 KOs) in an eight-round bout.

Armed with a new three-year deal with promoter Matchroom Sport and firmly entrenched as the sport's biggest star globally, the 28-year-old Joshua (21-0, 20 KOs) doesn't look at choosing Povetkin as necessarily risking a future fight with Wilder (40-0, 39 KOs), who is currently negotiating a bout with lineal champion Tyson Fury for December. Joshua also denied that choosing Povetkin had everything to do with the fight being used as a launching pad for the streaming service DAZN, which commenced in America on Sept. 10 ahead of Saturday's debut card (4:30 p.m. ET).

"I'm interested in where my goal is and what I'm destined to do. So I've kind of had to learn. I'm still physically a danger but I've had to step up my psyche.

Yet, despite his only pro defeat coming by decision against then-unified champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2013, Povetkin has been tabbed as a massive betting underdog which, in light of Joshua's vulnerable chin, could make him a live dog.

"I think right now I'm in one of the best shapes of my career," Povetkin said at Wednesday's media day in London. "Although I'm 39 right now, I feel like I'm 25. I have Anthony Joshua in my sights and that's all I'm focused about is this fight. This is very important for me and of course this will be one of my last chances to make an impact and I will.

For Povetkin to even be in this fight as a mandatory challenger has created plenty of debate considering his pair of failed drug tests (and minimal punishment) over the past two years, including one that cost him a 2016 title shot in Moscow against Wilder.

Joshua's camp was well aware coming in of Povetkin's reputation and that the danger he brings goes beyond just the power in his right hand. To counteract that, Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn paid for additional random testing during training camp beyond what was already being administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency.

They should be testing him and if they are, he should be clean and I'm confident that he's a clean fighter right now. I think he made a mistake then and he's got it right. This is a fight that will get the 20-year-old Garcia a lot of publicity if his 1.1 million Instagram followers take the time to watch him.

This isn’t the opponent that the highly popular Garcia wants to fight. Garcia is facing Morales because that’s who his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions want him to fight. Garcia has bigger ambitions. He wants to challenge WBA super featherweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis to take his title. Garcia sees Davis as a winnable fight for him.

Garcia’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya wants to put him on the undercard of Saul Canelo Alvarez’s December card. Canelo is fighting on September 15 against IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo wants to fight in December to make up for his lost May 5 date earlier this year when he was suspended. It’s unclear whether Canelo will fight in December if he’s beaten by Golovkin on September 15 or if he gets hurt in winning. Certainly a knockout loss for Canelo would result in him taking the rest of 2018 off, as it would be a bad idea for him to get back inside the ring so soon after that. Garcia will be kept busy by Golden Boy regardless.

NABF and NABO Super Featherweight champion Ryan "Kingry"Garcia (15-0, 13 KOs) and NABA Super Featherweight Champion Carlos "The Solution" Morales (17-2-3, 6 KOs) hosted a media workout at Legendz Boxing in Norwalk, Calif. on Monday, Aug. 27 ahead of their 10-round non-title fight. The fight will be streamed on Facebook Watch and Golden Boy Fight Night Page. Garcia and Morales will be fighting at lightweight with no world titles at stake.

Morales says he’s known ‘Kingry’ Garcia for a long time, as they trained in the same gym, and he says he still has the safe “goofball” personality that he had back then. However, Morales says he’s it’s not going to be fun and games when he gets Garcia inside the ring on Saturday night because this is about business. Morales doesn’t plan on making the fight a game. He’s coming to take care of business and add Garcia’s scalp to his resume.

With his huge following on social media, Ryan Garcia is really excited about his fight with Morales being streamed on Facebook on Saturday night. Garcia sees this as an ideal situation for him, and he expects the fight to bring in tremendous ratings due to his huge following. We’ll have to see if that’s the case or not. It’s not a big fight, but neither has any of Garcia’s past opponents and he’s brought in good ratings for those fights. If the Garcia-Morales fight does do huge numbers, it could create a monster in which Golden Boy feeds Ryan opponents that will bring in bigger numbers each time out but not necessarily are good fighters. The hardcore boxing fans don’t want to see Garcia pampered by Golden Boy by having him fight garbage opposition in order to milk his following and build up an inflated resume of weak opposition.

Garcia shows promise as a good contender with nifty boxing skills. The best thing Garcia has going for him right now besides his legions of younger fans on social media is his youth. Garcia can wait out fighters like Gervonta Davis, Alberto Machado and Miguel Berchelt until they get older and are forced to move out of the super featherweight division. Garcia will be there to move into one of their places as a champion. Of course, if some younger talent with punching power emerges in the weight class, then Garcia will likely be in the same boat as he is now in not having enough punching power to deal with guys like Gervonta, Berchelt, Tevin Farmer, Masayuki Ito and Machado.

Mikey Garcia (38-0; 30 KOs) takes on Robert Easter, Jr. (21-0; 14 KOs). The winner will unify the WBC and IBF Lightweight (135 lbs.) titles. Ring Magazine has Easter ranked the #3 contender in the division, with Garcia just above him at #2 - Garcia also sits on the pound for pound list at #5. The fight takes place this Saturday, July 28 in Los Angeles with a fight time of 10:00 p.m. ET and will be airing live aont Showtime. Also on the televised card is big hitting Heavyweight Luis Ortiz vs. Razvan Cojanu plus Mario Barrios vs. Jose Roman.

In 2013, Mikey Garcia was busy establishing himself as an undefeated, two division world champion and one of the true elite in boxing. Then, he stepped away from the sport, missing two and a half years and calling his entire career into question. He came back in 2016 and picked up right where he left off, winning 4 in a row and claiming a world title in his third weight class. The big question for Garcia is what the future holds. If he wins here, does he seek to unify belts at Lightweight, or move up to the more star-heavy divisions above him? And, perhaps most interestingly to MMA fans, does he end up signing with Dana White and Zuffa Boxing? This is a big time in Garcia’s career.

Robert Easter Jr. is 6 years into his pro career, and, interestingly, he’s pretty close to where Garcia was 6 years into his own career. Easter is building his resume, claiming a vacant world title two years ago and fighting an increasingly tough level of opponent. If anything, he’s beyond where Garcia was at this stage. That said, while Easter has shown himself to be a very good boxer with a tricky style that causes opponents headaches at times, he has not quite shown the potential for serious greatness we saw in Garcia. Easter is not super young at 27, but he’s young in the fight game and could be building an impressive career. A win here would be an absolutely massive feather in his cap. Of note: Easter is currently trained by Mike Stafford, who also trains recent Garcia opponent Adrien Broner.

Easter has consistently found ways to win, but it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. In particular, his fight with Fortuna was not a good performance, and would have been a draw if not for a point deduction for Fortuna. That fight was a bad predictor for this one if you are in the Easter camp, as he was outmaneuvered and beaten to the punch by a faster, smaller man. Here he faces... a faster, smaller man with superb technical skills. Garcia has shown no signs of slowing down, and though he’s giving up a lot of height and reach, he should be able to get inside and connect while using his defense to avoid a heavy Easter counter. I expect Garcia to fight smart to the end and wear Easter down enough to earn the late stoppage, but won’t be surprised if it goes to the judges either.

This is a good one to check out post-UFC simply to see Garcia in action. He’s top 5 in the world right now for a good reason. If you are yet to get on board the Garcia train, now’s the time.
