Jorge Linares has won world titles as a featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight and been one of boxing's top fighters for years.

But after losing his lightweight belt by 10th-round knockout to pound-for-pound king Vasiliy Lomachenko in a terrific and competitive battle on May 12 a fight in which Linares dropped Lomachenko in the sixth round and made the king look human Linares is going to give the junior welterweight division a try in his return to the ring.

Although Linares isn't shutting the door forever on the lightweight division, where he would return for the right fight, he is going to begin to try to make his case at 140 pounds, five more than lightweight.

Linares' efforts will begin when he faces Abner Cotto in a scheduled 12-round bout on Saturday at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, in the main event of a "Golden Boy Fight Night" card, which will be streamed live on Facebook Watch (9 p.m. ET) in the United States as part of the company's deal with the social media giant.

My new division, 140, I think it's a good thing for me, going up. I'm ready for that, Linares said. I want a title in fourth division. I'm focused on this Saturday and maybe next year I can make a good fight for a new title match.

Linares (44-4, 27 KOs), a Venezuela native fighting out of Las Vegas, said he had some struggles getting down to 135 pounds for the fight with Lomachenko. Linares had boxed as a lightweight since 2010, and at age 33 making weight has become more of an issue.

The last fight with Lomachenko felt different. It's not about Lomachenko; I'm fighting more than six years at 135," he said. "Now I'm ready to move to 140. I look stronger, faster, more natural. Now I'm ready for that. I'm looking for a good show; a good win. I'm not looking for the KO because I'm a very good boxer. More important for me is to make the good show and also win the fight."

Although Linares believes his future is at junior welterweight, he said he would make an exception and return to lightweight if he could get a rematch with Lomachenko, a fight that does not seem out of the question of happening given how good of a fight it was, or a shot at titleholder Mikey Garcia, with whom there had been talks before the fight with Lomachenko was made.

I'm looking for the rematch again. He wants the fight, I want the fight, too," Linares said of Lomachenko. If he wants to see me at 135 again, I can go down again only for that fight, and then going back to 140.

I'm looking for a fight with [Garcia] next, too. So many good fighters at 140. Jose Ramirez is an amazing champion, too, so I want that fight too.

Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Linares, said he hopes he can deliver those fights to Linares.

He wants a rematch with Lomachenko. It was a very competitive fight. It was a definitive result but it was a very good fight. It was a very close fight," Gomez said. "He would love to do the rematch with him. So if Lomachenko is open to that we're going to look into that. He wants to fight the big names. He's willing to give Mikey a fight or any of the top fighters at 135 or 140 pounds.

First, Linares must handle major underdog Cotto (23-3, 12 KOs), 31, of Puerto Rico, who has won five fights in a row since a fifth-round knockout loss to former junior lightweight titlist Javier Fortuna in November 2014.

I've prepared very well for this fight. I'm training with Jorge Zerpa for this fight. He isn't a new trainer. In fact, we were together 11 years ago when I fought for my first world title against Oscar 'El Chololo' Larios in Las Vegas (in 2007)," Linares said. "We're working on a lot of things, but mostly we've been reviewing and going back to an old school style of training. I'm not changing my style, just adding some things. I had been thinking about moving to 140 pound for some time.

When the opportunity to fight Lomachenko came, I took the fight at 135 pounds even though it was already difficult to do so. If I were to get the opportunity to fight him again, I would drop to 135 pounds, but for now I'll look for more opportunities at 140 pounds. I need to get stay focused on the opponent in front of me. I know Abner Cotto is tough. He knows how to fight on the inside and the outside. I know he will work hard to give a great fight this Saturday."

In the co-feature, lightweight Romero Duno (17-1, 14 KOs), a Philippines native based in Los Angeles, will face Mexico's Ezequiel Aviles (16-2-3, 6 KOs) in an eight-round bout.

In 2013, Mikey Garcia was busy establishing himself as an undefeated, two division world champion and one of the true elite in boxing. Then, he stepped away from the sport, missing two and a half years and calling his entire career into question. He came back in 2016 and picked up right where he left off, winning 4 in a row and claiming a world title in his third weight class. The big question for Garcia is what the future holds. If he wins here, does he seek to unify belts at Lightweight, or move up to the more star-heavy divisions above him? And, perhaps most interestingly to MMA fans, does he end up signing with Dana White and Zuffa Boxing? This is a big time in Garcia’s career.

Robert Easter Jr. is 6 years into his pro career, and, interestingly, he’s pretty close to where Garcia was 6 years into his own career. Easter is building his resume, claiming a vacant world title two years ago and fighting an increasingly tough level of opponent. If anything, he’s beyond where Garcia was at this stage. That said, while Easter has shown himself to be a very good boxer with a tricky style that causes opponents headaches at times, he has not quite shown the potential for serious greatness we saw in Garcia. Easter is not super young at 27, but he’s young in the fight game and could be building an impressive career. A win here would be an absolutely massive feather in his cap. Of note: Easter is currently trained by Mike Stafford, who also trains recent Garcia opponent Adrien Broner.

Easter has consistently found ways to win, but it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. In particular, his fight with Fortuna was not a good performance, and would have been a draw if not for a point deduction for Fortuna. That fight was a bad predictor for this one if you are in the Easter camp, as he was outmaneuvered and beaten to the punch by a faster, smaller man. Here he faces... a faster, smaller man with superb technical skills. Garcia has shown no signs of slowing down, and though he’s giving up a lot of height and reach, he should be able to get inside and connect while using his defense to avoid a heavy Easter counter. I expect Garcia to fight smart to the end and wear Easter down enough to earn the late stoppage, but won’t be surprised if it goes to the judges either.

This is a good one to check out post-UFC simply to see Garcia in action. He’s top 5 in the world right now for a good reason. If you are yet to get on board the Garcia train, now’s the time.

Australian WBO champion Jeff Horn has the chance to send his career into another stratosphere if he can pull off the unthinkable and defeat American Terence Crawford in Las Vegas.

The former Brisbane schoolteacher’s first mandatory defence of his WBO welterweight championship on Sunday (AEST) is, by far, the biggest test of his career.

The MGM Grand has seen its fair share of big bouts, with the 16,000 seat arena playing host to fights like the infamous clash between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield in 1997 and Floyd Mayweather’s history making fight against Manny Pacquiao.

While Horn’s win over Pacquiao in 2017 was huge, a victory over Crawford would be even bigger especially at this point in his career.

But even though Horn beat the Filipino legend in his own backyard, taking on a fighter the calibre of Crawford in Las Vegas is a completely different beast altogether.

Crawford, 30, is currently at his peak and is rated by keen judges as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. The Nebraska native oozes class with his technical skills second to none and boasts a record without loss.

Making things even harder for the Australian is the fact that Bob Arum's Top Rank promotions and sports broadcaster ESPN are totally committed to making Crawford the new face of US boxing.

Horn’s biggest problem come Sunday will be trying to deal with Crawford’s speed and power. The American has superior hand speed and the Queenslander could be in danger if he finds his range early. Equally, Crawford can’t engage in a rough and tumble kind of battle with Horn because of the Australian’s size.

The Omaha fighter is stepping up in weight and can’t let Horn dictate the fight from the inside. If he lets Horn fight up close, then the Queenslander will do his best to bully him. Watch for Crawford to establish his range early and keep his space and use his jab to assert his dominance.

Horn’s WBO welterweight title goes on the line while Crawford has a chance to sniff out another title in another division.

Beating Crawford would see Horn silence several doubters in the US and result in his star rising quickly on the international scene which would culminate in bigger money fights against the likes Keith Thurman and Errol Spence Jr.

If Horn loses, then it’s most likely his chances of scoring big money fights will be dashed and the rest of his fights will more than likely be confined to Australia.

Horn will take home $2.5 million win or lose.

While the expectations for a repeat in action are aplenty entering Saturday's Leo Santa Cruz-Abner Mares featherweight title rematch, both fighters agree the second fight will look just a bit different.

Santa Cruz (34-1-1, 19 KOs), a three-division titleholder, will defend his WBA 126-pound championship against Mares (31-2-1, 15 KOs), who holds the organization's secondary title, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles (Showtime, 10 p.m. ET). The doubleheader also features WBC junior middleweight titleholder Jermell Charlo against former champion Austin Trout.

The reason for the difference surrounds the performance from Mares, 32, in their first fight three years ago. Much of the drama and action that night can be credited to Mares' willingness to throw caution to the wind in the first half by rushing Santa Cruz with constant flurries.

The main drawback of that style, however, was that Mares ran out of gas late, allowing Santa Cruz, 29, to take home a majority decision in one of 2015's best fights.

"I can't go in with the same exact mentality as last time and try to knock Leo's head off," Mares said. "I have power, but I'm not a one-punch knockout artist. The difference between our fight in 2015 and now is that I'm a more mature and seasoned fighter. I've been in this sport a long time, and now with having [trainer] Robert Garcia in my corner, he's really helped my mental game and given me great guidance."

Santa Cruz was able to balance when to fight off Mares with flurries at close range and when to rely on his length to box from the outside. He expects a much more tactical fight this time around against a much more disciplined Mares.

"I think he's going to be more cautious this time and smarter," Santa Cruz told CBS Sports' "In This Corner" podcast on Monday. "He had heart like a true Mexican warrior [in the first fight]. He came forward and threw a lot of punches. He didn't run and he was exchanging with me. He came out and tried to knock me out and he got tired. I think he is going to come out more relaxed and smarter and will try to move more.

We have already seen Mares come up short in his attempt to bully and overwhelm Santa Cruz with power punches. It's also difficult to imagine Mares -- a boxer-puncher who has always favored reckless aggressiveness to technical brilliance -- outboxing Santa Cruz as the busier fighter.

If there's a hybrid strategy to be employed for Mares in order to disarm Santa Cruz's long jab, surely new trainer Robert Garcia can come up with it and it likely involves the idea of Mares being more patient to look for counter shots and smart opportunities to surprise with flurries.

Mares' speed advantage could certainly help him in that quest. But Santa Cruz has evolved into such a well-rounded fighter, mixing combinations to the body and heavy activity behind his jab, that it may not matter.

Until Mares can find a flaw in Santa Cruz's game that he's able to exploit, his lack of one-punch power and deficiencies in technique compared to his opponent present a hill that's not easily climbed considering Santa Cruz is the taller and longer fighter at the peak of his physical prime.

The rematch has all the makings to be exciting, but will probably end up looking more like Santa Cruz's two fights with Frampton than their frantic first fight. That is, unless Mares becomes frustrated and reverts to his default. Either way, it's likely to play into the hands of Santa Cruz, who has shown nothing short of an iron chin up to this point.
